Large red signs melt into the urban landscape. The army is signing up “the will” of the Burmese people. These surprising phrases appear on the front page of each publication, before showing a film, and in newspapers. No edition escapes the requirement to mention them. Behind the fairytale decor of the « land of ten thousand pagodas » is hiding a more sinister reality, a heavy atmosphere like the one at night which takes over the city.
In the street, the body language of workers, drowsy people, wandering around, expresses something different. Maybe they are silently telling what others dare whisper in the ear of a foreigner who hangs around for a while.
The economic situation gets worse from year to year. There is an ever-widening gap between the standard of living of the majority of the population and the military and their families and friends.
