The project
The “Burma, dreams under surveillance” project was created in 2003 by the humanitarian organisation Les yeux dans le monde to increase understanding and knowledge of the social and political situation in Burma through cultural events and photographs.

Two members of the organisation, Manon Ott and Grégory Cohen, went to Burma on a number of occasions between 2003 and 2007 and have worked on the Burmese-Thai border where many Burmese refugee camps are based. Over there, they met intellectuals, traders, monks and migrant workers who told them their stories. These were ordinary stories and stories about resistance. Later, they were joined by Mathieu Flammarion, an artist, who has added collages of illustrations to the photographic display.

This work has now been made into a book published by Autrement. The photographs and accounts are also displayed at various events including exhibitions, conferences and festivals).

Backed by a group of NGO partners on this project, we hope to give a platform to the resistant voices, those of intellectuals, – artists, writers or journalists from Rangoon who face censorship, and to the voices of ordinary people, who have had to go into exile or refugee camps in Thailand.
